1947 entwarf der japanisch-amerikanische Künstler Isamu Noguchi  Sculpture To Be Seen From Mars: das Gesicht eines Menschen, zwei Meilen groß. Zwei Jahre nach der Zerstörung von Hiroshima und Nagasaki stellte Noguchi sich vor, dass dieses Werk das Einzige wäre, was nach dem atomaren Blowout noch vom Leben auf der Erde künden würde. Die Skulptur ist ein Stück Land Art, zwanzig Jahre bevor die eigentliche Land Art und später auch die Environmental Art als Kunstströmungen entstanden, eine künstlerische Vision, die nie umgesetzt wurde.
Für die Auftaktausstellung der Stadtkuratorin Hamburg mit dem Titel From the Cosmos to the Commons laden wir Euch ein, gemeinsam eine Arbeit zu schaffen, die von der Sculpture To Be Seen From Mars inspiriert ist und diese zugleich als Living Sculpture neu interpretiert. Auf dem Platz vor dem Planetarium werden wir ein ca. 10x10 Meter großes Gesicht zunächst modellieren und dann bepflanzen. Dabei wechseln sich Phasen des Gärtnerns und Phasen des Reflektierens ab. Wir nehmen uns Zeit, über große Fragen nachzudenken:
Seit dem Ende des zweiten Weltkriegs leben wir mit dem Wissen, dass die Menschen ihre Existenz auf der Erde womöglich selbst beenden werden. In Sculpture to Be Seen from the Sky sehen wir uns im Spiegel unserer möglichen Selbstzerstörung. In den vergangenen 80 Jahren haben sich die Szenarien des Aussterbens vervielfacht und verändert, - mit der Klimakrise und den andauernden Kriegen sind weitere Gefahren hinzugekommen und damit neue Dimensionen planetarer Verantwortung und Verbindung. Heute stehen wir am Beginn einer neuen Phase der Aufrüstung. Wie leben wir damit und trotzdem?

In 1947, the Japanese American artist Isamu Noguchi designed the Sculpture To Be Seen From Mars, a face of a human being, two miles tall. Two years after the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Noguchi imagined this piece as the last witness to life on earth after the nuclear blowout. The sculpture is a piece of Land Art, twenty years before the Land Art, and later the environmental art, emerged as art movements, an artistic vision that was never realized. For the inaugural exhibition by Stadtkuratorin Hamburg, called From the Cosmos to the Commons, we invite you to collectively create an earth piece inspired by the Sculpture to be Seen From Mars and to reinterpret it as a Living Sculpture. On the square in front of the Planetarium, we will first model a 10x10 meter face and then plant it. Phases of gardening will alternate with phases of reflection. We will take time to think about big questions: Since the end of the Second World War, we have lived with the knowledge that humans may end their own existence on earth. In Sculpture to be Seen from the Sky, we see ourselves in the mirror of our possible self-destruction. In the past 80 years, the scenarios of extinction have multiplied and changed - with the climate crisis and on-going wars, other dangers have been added, and with them, the new dimensions of planetary responsibility and connection. Today we face the beginning of a new era of rearmament. How do we live with this, and despite it?
